We all know people who seem to live to eat, rather than
eating to live. Some of us are those people
at times. I’ve done pretty well with
this in my adult life, usually able to focus on life instead of food. Sometimes I do get sidetracked….
Often, getting together with friends or relatives means the food comes fast and furiously. It’s hard to say No to food cooked by a dear,
hardworking hostess, especially when much of it is desserts upon which the rest of the family places great importance. But while
sweets are hard for me to resist, I don’t really enjoy them. I enjoy meals that taste good, that make me
feel good and that I can forget about afterward.
From my own cook’s angle, entertaining doesn’t have to mean
spending all day in the kitchen, feeding guests like there’s no tomorrow. I love
to feed people, but hopefully they come to see me, not just eat my cooking. They might even be thankful if we cooks spend
less time in the kitchen and help them with their goal of eating to live. In turn, what’s healthy for our guests is usually
what’s healthy for us!
Besides being dog-obsessed, I tend also to be food obsessed. I hear what you're saying with the live to eat vs. eat to live comment! Luckily, my husband and I attend very few dinners outside of the home, making eating healthy a little easier (although I felt pangs of jealousy when you spoke of desserts -- I can't remember the last time I had something sweet and gooey after a meal.
ReplyDeleteWe have also found that avoiding eating in restaurants helps with healthy eating as well. There are so many hidden (and sometimes not so hidden) ingredients in what is served out of the house that it makes it difficult to tend to a healthier lifestyle. I believe that salt and fat are likely among the top ingredients to most everything, which of course is why it all tastes to darn good!
You are right, Missy, the goal for restaurant food is to taste good, not to be healthy. This is a good topic for another blog post. :-)
DeleteI love your line, "that I can forget about afterward." I think I need to keep that idea in mind while I am eating. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Toby!
DeleteYou know, when I'm eating right I feel good. If I eat much in the way of sweets or junk food, then I end up bloated all day. Who wants to be constantly reminded about what they ate 12 hours earlier? LOL
I like the idea of your blog, and think it could be inspiring, but it would be very helpful if you could give the reader more tips, inspiration or tools for eating healthy and exercising.
ReplyDeleteHi Christina,
DeleteI will be sharing some tips in the coming weeks, but probably won't get super specific... I've made some major changes in my lifestyle over the years which I wouldn't expect everyone to relate to. (Just need to get back to that lifestyle after gaining six pounds from restaurant foods while on vacation!) We'll focus on small changes that busy people can implement easily. Number 1? Remember that we (along with our guests) are eating to live. Just knowing that fact helps me to eat less.
just because you dont expect everyone to relate to your lifestyle changes doesnt mean you shouldnt share them! even if a person isnt ready to fully implement a change, they may still find a useful kernel of wisdom in the idea :)
